THE SLATE BOOK
A GUIDE TO THE SLATE AND STYLUS

The Slate Book is the basic, universal Braille writing tool and           is equivalent to the pen or pencil for writing print.”

So begins this excellent new book, The Slate Book: A Guide to the Slate and Stylus, by Jennifer Dunnam. In her brief introduction Ms. Dunnam, an experienced Braille teacher, explains how this low-tech device continues to meet a critical need in the high-tech world of electronic notetakers. In clear, concise language accompanied by helpful—but not essential—black and white photographs, the book covers every imaginable slate and stylus related topic.

These topics include:

Teachers will especially appreciate the suggestions for specific techniques—i.e. Making Flash Cards, Hints on Taking Notes, Working Math Problems, etc.—and the detailed, sequential practice exercises provided in Parts II and III. To top it off, Ms. Dunnam includes descriptions and photos of different kinds of slates and styluses, an extensive appendix of Suggestions for Teachers, and a list of Sources of Braille Writing Supplies.
