There will be dancing, crafting, and activities to help the girls discover superpowers that make them unique. The mayor of Ruston has proclaimed October as Meet the Blind Month. Our Canes and Coffee event is a chance to educate the public about blindness and to create awareness that with the proper training and opportunity, blindness can be reduced to a mere inconvenience. We will be answering questions about blindness while sharing information about Braille, cane travel, computers and alternative techniques of daily living. Moreover, since I am the NJ Affiliate Voting Liaison (HAVA), I also plan to educate them about the audio machine. Finally, I will share information about the South Jersey Chapter of the NFBJ, offering them our open invitation to join us at a chapter meeting and demonstrate “Changing What It Means to Be Blind”.

A laptop computer will also be used to demonstrate how a screen reader and screen magnification is used to access the Internet as well as create documents.   We will also demonstrate how to use the iPhone, iPad, and the use of our white canes as we walk proudly with our canes throughout the event.  

We will have drawings for door prizes, many of which  were received from our community businesses. Additionally, we will have two raffles; each with an $100 gift card reward!
