Access Technology Specialist


The access technology specialist works as an integral part of the access technology team of the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute. A qualified individual will be a key resource in creating and disseminating information about available accessible technology and will work with companies in the private sector, government agencies, and educational institutions to make their products and services, websites, and applications accessible to the blind. The access technology specialist will report directly to the manager of accessibility programs. 


The responsibilities of an access technology specialist include:

  • Be an effective advocate for nonvisual accessibility
  • Evaluate new and existing access technology
  • Evaluate new and existing mainstream technology for nonvisual accessibility and usability
  • Conduct training on access technology and web accessibility
  • Write about new and existing technology and related topics for the blog as well as for publications
  • Conduct web accessibility evaluations using an automated tool chosen by the National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute access technology team
  • Perform usability testing of websites using screen access software packages for Windows, Mac, and the mobile platform
  • Write up comprehensive reports on the accessibility status of websites
  • Keep current with the ever-changing web accessibility design techniques
  • Stay up-to-date with screen access software development
  • Build expertise on the various web accessibility validation tools available in the US market
  • Raise awareness of web accessibility practices among the blind
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Knowledge of and interest in access technology
  • Proficient in accessible HTML and CSS techniques
  • Proficient in the use of Windows and Mac productivity suites
  • Knowledge of how to use screen access programs for Windows, Mac, and mobile platforms
  • Ability to work effectively as a part of a team
  • Good personal time management skills and ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to be self-motivated and result-oriented

Preferred Skills

  • Ability to read Braille preferred
  • Technical writing skills preferred
  • Training experience preferred

Educational Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor’s degree in a related field
