Museum Project Lead


The National Federation of the Blind is a membership organization of blind people from each of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. As America's civil rights organization of the blind, the Federation is a coordinated network of skilled advocates, resources, and programs that raise expectations of the blind in society and create opportunities for blind people to live the lives they want. The staff of the Federation are central to the organized blind movement by providing support, professional expertise, and daily contributions to the success of the organization. Working under the direction of the Federation's elected President, the staff advise the organization's leadership and contribute to the vibrant, energetic, and collaborative culture of the organization that raises expectations throughout society.

Reporting directly to the President, the Museum Project Lead will serve as the organization’s day-to-day lead for coordinating the internal aspects of the development of the Museum of the Blind People’s Movement through its opening (before the end of the decade). The museum will provide guests with the opportunity to explore the advancements, struggles, and successes of blind people as individuals and as a movement. It will facilitate understanding of the past; stimulate awareness in the present; and encourage respect, determination, action, and equity for the future. Fellow museums and other cultural organizations will look to the Museum of the Blind People’s Movement for best practices around inclusive design and accessibility, and it will serve as a model for how to welcome the widest possible audience. The museum will be housed within a twenty-thousand-square-foot space allocated from the overall office space utilized by the Federation. The Museum Project Lead will work with all of the key internal and external stakeholders to coordinate the project team and accomplish all needed deliverables leading to a successful museum launch. 


  • Coordinate and organize all efforts of Federation staff, members, partners, and contractors in the development phases of the museum.
  • Advise the President and NFB Board of Directors on important decision points.
  • Communicate project direction, identify and address open project deliverables, and facilitate communication across all project stakeholders and collaborators.
  • Develop and maintain schedules while ensuring timely completion of project milestones.
  • Monitor for issues and proactively mitigate any risks while keeping all projects on track.
  • Track approvals and change requests.
  • Center inclusive design within and across every aspect of the project.
  • Record and maintain project files, including meeting minutes and decisions, and track action items across the project.
  • Document lessons learned and insights gained during development phases.
  • Ensure the mission and mandate of the museum are met.
  • Develop a long-term plan for the museum in accordance with the organization’s strategic plans and objectives.
  • Identify, nurture, and coordinate community partnerships to ensure that the cultural diversity of the blind community and the surrounding Baltimore community are reflected in the plans of the museum.
  • Manage and monitor project budgets, ensuring fiscal responsibility and adherence to financial guidelines.
  • Assist with research and application/contract preparation for fundraising and sponsorship opportunities for major cultural events and initiatives.
  • Bring the brand of the museum to life. 
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the President.

  • Strong commitment to diversity and inclusion through the elevation of the stories of blind people.

Education and Experience

  • Post-secondary education in discipline(s) such as museum studies, history, arts administration, education, cultural site management, etc., or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Considerable experience coordinating a range of tasks, including programs, events, and staffing in a museum or community arts environment.
  • Experience nurturing community partnerships that center equity while providing excellent and thorough engagement to a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience working in the museum and cultural sector.
  • Familiarity in working with cultural content, museum collections, media production, and exhibitions.
  • Experience working directly with historically oppressed communities.
  • Project management experience with responsibility for budget administration.
  • Experience with the blind community (preferred).

Compensation and Benefits

The pay range for this position is 90,000  to 105,000 dollars.
