In this issue you will read a good deal about the NFB Jernigan Institutes programs to encourage blind students to pursue science. In general blind people are not welcome in the laboratory or in the field. But the word is now beginning to spread: blind kids can really do science. In July of 2005 eleven students gathered at the NFB Jernigan Institute to build and launch a real rocket. Read about their unforgettable experience in Matt Maurers insightful article in this issue. Here all eleven Rocket On! participants: (back row, left to right) Michael Welty, Helen Stevens, and Kelly Wills; (front row) James Dietz, Kyle Conley, Nicole Torcolini, Beto Carreto, Keao Wright, Heather Hammond, Jonathon Nolan, and Nijat Worley pose with the completed rocket somewhat before launch.
