Future Reflections Convention 1999, Vol. 18 No. 4
The Marriott Marquis in Atlanta, Georgia will once again be the host site for the National Federation of the Blind convention in 2000. The dates are Saturday, July 1 through Saturday, July 8. As usual, the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children (NOPBC) will conduct its annual meeting during the convention, as well as sponsor numerous workshops throughout the week.
The activities for parents will begin on Saturday, July 1, with a Family Event followed by workshop sessions for parents and teachers, a Braille Carnival, and baby-sitting course and discussion groups for teens in the afternoon. That evening, families can relax at Family Hospitality, and youth ages 9 to 18 can learn how to get to key points in the hotel through a scavenger hunt complete with prizes and snacks for everyone. As customary, there will be three- to four-hour in-depth workshops on IDEA and IEPs, beginning Braille for parents, and cane travel for kids at some point in the convention. NOPBC will also sponsor a get-acquainted teen hospitality afternoon and a supervised teen "hang-out" room during the week.
Childcare will be available through NFB Camp, directed by Carla McQuillan. However, a very important change has been made: there is an absolute pre-registration cut-off date for NFB Camp of June 15, 2000. This means that "drop-ins" will NOT be accepted. This step has been taken to avoid the problems that occur when the number of children showing up for childcare services exceed staffing capacities. In 1999, for example, about 40 children were pre-registered, and so plans (allowing for a reasonable number of "drop-ins" of course) were made accordingly. However, more than double that number of children showed up.
Pre-registration forms for NFB Camp will be available from:
