At the headquarters of the nation’s leading blindness organization, the National Federation of the Blind, the switchboard operator/receptionist manages a multiline switchboard, answering and directing the calls to appropriate destinations in an efficient and friendly manner. The switchboard operator is the first person to greet guests, customers, and members who call or visit the NFB’s Jernigan Institute, making an important first impression for our organization.  

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of an switchboard operator/receptionist include:

  • Answer incoming calls, greet callers, provide information, transfer calls and/or take messages as necessary
  • Manage multiple concurrent phone calls, handling each as needed
  • Page individuals to inform them of telephone calls using office paging system
  • Transcribe callers’ names, contact information, and reasons for calling accurately
  • Perform clerical duties and administrative tasks, such as preparing mailings, proofreading, and document editing
  • Maintain steady, punctual attendance and neat personal appearance
  • Be available for occasional after-hours programs and events
  • Perform other duties as requested or needed

  • Ability to listen and understand information and ideas presented through spoken word
  • Effective communication skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others
  • Ability to comprehend and execute complex written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to act efficiently with a calm, friendly demeanor in stressful situations
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Basic computer skills and familiarity with standard office productivity applications
  • Experience in a call center environment preferred

Preferred Skills

  • Braille proficiency preferred
