October: NFB of Idaho

Did you know? Idaho has a YouTube channel called Idaho's Blind. During the month of October check the channel for interesting videos about gardening, weddings, yoga, and hopefully a proclamation from the Mayor!

October: NFB of Mississippi

During this month, a donation will be made to a local nursing home in honor of Blind Equality Achievement Month. Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are the items which will be donated.

October 1-3: NFB of Maryland and Maryland Parents of Blind Children

The National Federation of the Blind of Maryland and Maryland Parents of Blind Children are hosting Wizarding Weekend on Main Street in Ellicott City, Maryland from October 1 to 3. The event includes tours, trivia, music, and more that share positive philosophy about blindness and the important work of the National Federation of the Blind.

October 3: Jefferson City Chapter of Montana

The National Federation of the Blind of Jefferson City, MO is in our 40th year as a chapter. October 3rd will be our annual walk-a-thon on the track around the beautiful lake at McKay Park here in Jefferson City. We started doing this October activity back in 1988.

October 9: Potomac, Alexandria, and Fairfax Chapters of Virginia

The Potomac, Alexandria, and Fairfax Chapters of the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia will be holding a joint activity on October 9 at the Alexandria Waterfront in Alexandria, Virginia from approximately 10:00 a.m. through approximately 2:00 p.m. Eastern. We will gather with a banner and flyers, set up at tables in a centrally located seating area, and answer the public’s questions about blindness, hand out Braille alphabet cards and Braille names and short messages, hand out a brief FAQ and some NFB brochures, demonstrate assistive technology, mobility techniques, read children’s stories if the environment (noise) permits, etc. We will be reaching out to the Alexandria mayor for a proclamation and possible appearance; other local officials will be contacted as well.

October 15: San Joaquin County Chapter of California

The San Joaquin County Chapter, National Federation of the Blind of California is holding our 3rd Annual White Cane Awareness Walk & Celebration in partnership with the Stockton-San Joaquin Lions Club. We are excited that this event will be in person, kicking off Friday, October 15, 2021 at noon with a White Cane Awareness Day Proclamation Ceremony in the northwest Weberstown Mall parking lot near Yokuts Ave., west of where the San Joaquin Regional Transit District’s Hoppers Park, 4950 Pacific Ave, Stockton. We will host an info table with “Courtesy Rules of Blindness” handouts, NFB Braille alphabet bookmarks and our Mountain Mike’s Pizza fundraiser flyers from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. prior to the ceremony; walk will directly follow our ceremony. October 15, 12 PM Eastern: Central Florida Chapter of Florida

October 15: Jackson Chapter of Mississippi

A member of the Jackson Chapter spoke on a local radio station on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, about White Cane Awareness Day and a White Cane Awareness Walk she is sponsoring at her job on Friday, October 15, 2021.  

October 15: NFB of Mississippi

Blind students will compete in goalball against adults on Friday, October 15, 2021.  Additionally, blind students will share their appreciation for their white canes to adults and other students, including those new to blindness.

October 15: Houston Chapter of Texas

Join us for Houston's 15th Annual White Cane Safety Day!
Zoom Program: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.; Zoom Resources Fair: 1 - 3 p.m.
You are invited to register for this virtual event where one lucky person who registers could win the grand door prize of a Sony Play Station 5 (PS5). Join us for special performances, a showcase of blind and visually impaired individuals living productive lives, and the history of White Cane Safety Day. October 16: National Association of Blind Students

The National Association of Blind Students are holding a fundraiser and trivia event on Saturday, October 16 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on Zoom. It will be a fun night of trivia as well as clips spotlighting Blind Equality Achievement Month. Registration is a $5 donation to the National Association of Blind Students and gives you a shot at winning a door prize! October 16: Red Rocks Chapter of Utah

“Make Sense” Artisans Competition - Local artisans were encouraged to enter their artwork for a chance to win $300. Art work will be judged on October 16th at the Christ the King Catholic Church in the “Media Center,” Pavilion Volleyball area. There are two categories for entries:

Category 1: Media chosen must represent and depict aspects of Blindness, Vision Loss  and/or DeafBlindness. The art piece must be handmade. Pieces can be a person, place or thing.

Category 2: The art creation must be a tactile experience or artwork that includes other senses (hearing, smell, etc.). No edible artwork. Keeping in mind the theme “Vision Loss, Blindness and/or DeafBlindness”.

October 16: Winchester Chapter of Virginia

The Winchester Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Virginia will host an event on October 16 in conjunction with the Lions Club at the walking mall to coincide with blind Equality Achievement Month and White Cane Awareness Day. This event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in front of the Presbyterian Church down by the kids fountain. We will have a table along with our banner, brochures and information and plenty of white canes.

October 19: Sligo Creek Chapter of Maryland

Members of the Sligo Creek Chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of Maryland will be at the Montgomery County Council meeting to proclaim White Cane Awareness Day on Tuesday, October 19, at 9 a.m.  The event will be on the YouTube link below.

October 23: Greater Jacksonville Chapter of Florida

The NFB of Florida will be attending the Riverside Art Market as a group on Saturday, October 23 beginning at 10:00 a.m. Eastern to walk around the area, hand out Federation materials, and finish the event with lunch. Even during this pandemic time, it is important for us to join together and be seen in the community. The information for the Riverside Art Market is as follows: https://riversideartsmarket.org/. This is a rain or shine event located under the Fuller-Warren Bridge from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

October 23: NFB of Hawai'i

Aloha and greetings from the National Federation of the Blind of Hawai'i, NFBH.

When: Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 8-10 a.m. Hawai'i-Aleutan Standard Time | Since COVID 19 still exists, the local National Federation of the Blind of Hawai'i Leeward O’ahu Chapter is introducing its second annual virtual statewide "White Cane Walk-A-Thon!" We are inviting everyone and anyone and all of Hawai'i Keiki to Kupuna to join in the fun. This walk will take place on Saturday, October 23 in our own neighborhoods, keeping social distance and wearing our masks, while being broadcasted via zoom, and featured streaming on Facebook Live.
