Experts at the Center of Excellence in Nonvisual Access offer training events to share best practices in web accessibility and access technology. Below is a list of the events by date. We host conferences, seminars, and accessibility boutiques.Maryland Department of Disabilities Logo

Accessibility Boutiques and CENA seminars are offered by the National Federation of the Blind thanks to the support of state of Maryland through the Nonvisual Accessibility Initiative grant administered by the Maryland Department of Disabilities.

November 26: How to Train Friends and Family on a Screen Reader 

2:00 – 3:30 p.m. eastern via Zoom 

Learning access technology can appear daunting to a newly blind person. Finding quality access technology training can also be difficult for several factors. This is where technology savvy friends and family can help someone start learning how to use a screen reader. Join the National Federation of the Blind on Tuesday, November 26, from 2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m. eastern to learn how you can teach a friend or family member how to get started with a screen reader. We will cover:

  • How a screen reader works
  • How screen readers present content
  • Common keyboard shortcuts to start with
  • Further training resources to learn how to use multiple screen readers

December 18: Accessible Device Showcase

1:00 – 5:00 p.m. eastern via Zoom 

Whether you are buying for yourself or searching for the perfect gift for family or friends, it can be hard to find consumer electronic devices accessible to blind and low-vision individuals. The National Federation of the Blind in partnership with the Maryland Department of Disabilities is hosting an Accessible Device Showcase on December 18, from 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. eastern. This showcase will help you write a gift or personal wish list with the latest accessible consumer electronic devices in mind. From smart homes to leisure activities, we will present:

  • Video games
  • Smart home devices
  • Mobile applications
  • Toys and games
  • Home appliances
