National Federation of the Blind Commends Biden-Harris Executive Order on Wages for Federal Contractors

Baltimore, Maryland (April 27, 2021): The National Federation of the Blind, America’s civil rights organization of the blind, released the following statement on the executive order issued today by the Biden-Harris administration regarding wages for federal contract workers:

“We commend the Biden-Harris administration for expressly including workers with disabilities in the new requirements for wages paid by federal contractors,” said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “This is a significant step toward ending the antiquated and discriminatory practice of paying workers with disabilities less than the minimum wage, a practice based on outdated stereotypes and low expectations regarding the capacity of blind and disabled workers. We urge Congress to take ending this practice further by passing the Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act, which will responsibly phase out subminimum wages for all American workers with disabilities.”
