CHARLYN SPENCER PYNE:
NLS CHILDREN'S LIBRARIAN
Editor's Note: The following article is reprinted
from the National Library Service for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped January-March, 1987,
issue of News.
Charlynn Spencer Pyne has been appointed
children's librarian in the NLS Collection
Development Section effective January 12,1987.
Her major duties include selecting and annotating
books to be produced in Braille and recorded
formats for children from preschool through
grade nine and for young adult patrons. She will
also serve as a member of the NLS committee on
children's services and will coordinate the
Library of Congress Advisory Committee on
Selection of Children's Books for the Blind and
Physically Handicapped.
Ms. Pyne comes to NLS from Howard University,
where she served as reference librarian and
children's literature specialist in the MorlandSpingarn
Research Center. She has a B.A.
Degree from Howard and M.L.S. degree from
the University of Maryland and has done further
graduate work at Sangamon State University in
Illinois.
In addition, Miss Pyne has published articles on
children's literature, hosted a children's literary radio series "Made for Children," and lectured in
the District of Columbia public libraries as a
humanities scholar on children's literature.
