Social Security Disability Insurance and Unemployment Benefits Quick Facts

Our members report an average of about 270 days before Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) approval. If you have been on SSDI in the last five years then you can apply for expedited reinstatement, and your benefits will start in the following month.

We encourage people to apply for unemployment as soon as they are eligible.

Below is information that is relevant to individuals living in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia.

Washington, DC, Maryland, and Virginia

An individual cannot qualify for unemployment benefits while on administrative leave, as it is considered a form of employment.

In Maryland, a person can apply for unemployment benefits after their last day of employment. However, the rules regarding unemployment eligibility and applications may vary from state to state.

The amount of unemployment benefits an individual can receive differs by state. The maximum weekly benefit amounts are as follows:

  • Washington, DC: $444
  • Maryland: $430
  • Virginia: $378

Typically, unemployment benefits are available for up to 26 weeks. However, there may be exceptions, but this time may be extended under certain circumstances.

If a person is receiving unemployment benefits, they may still apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), as they would remain below the threshold for substantial gainful activity.
