Tactile Graphics in Education and Careers Symposium

at the

National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute

October 11-12, 2018

The National Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute will host a symposium on the use of tactile graphics to educate blind and low-vision students on October 11-12, 2018 at the Jernigan Institute in Baltimore.

We are currently seeking proposals for general session and breakout session presentations. Presentations are to be approximately forty-five minutes in duration. In addition, approximately fifteen minutes will be allotted for questions from the audience. All proposals based on a topic that focuses on tactile graphics in education will be considered, but priority will be given to proposals with a topic in the following broad areas:

  • Access to and use of tactile graphics in K-12, including for students who are home schooled
  • Access to and use of tactile graphics in higher education
  • Tactile graphics resources for self-directed learning
  • Tactile graphics repositories
  • Innovations in production methods, equipment, and materials
  • Tactile literacy
  • Design considerations and principles—what is good design?
  • Educating and upskilling in the workplace
  • Use of tactile graphics in museums and libraries for education
  • The intersection of tactile art and tactile graphics in education (tactile representations of art, tools that facilitate tactile drawing, instructional techniques that support the development of drawing and drafting skills, etc.)

Proposals that illustrate creativity and innovation in advancing the state of the art in tactile graphics are strongly encouraged. Individuals and organizations interested in submitting a proposal for a general session or breakout session presentation on a topic within the above broad topic areas should complete the attached proposal form and email it to rpugh@nfb.org. All proposals must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. Eastern on May 7, 2018. Speakers whose proposals are accepted are encouraged to submit manuscripts based on their presentation to the Journal of Blindness Innovation and Research for consideration of publication in a special edition dedicated to the Tactile Graphics in Education and Careers Symposium.

All proposals must include the following information (please use the proposal form):

1. Title
2. Author
3. Organization/affiliation
4. Contact information, including postal address, email address, and phone number
5. List of all speakers if a panel is proposed

7. An abstract describing the presentation. The text of the abstract should not exceed five hundred words.
8. If a presentation is a hands-on presentation, include a description of the materials and equipment that will be used.
9. If a presentation will include tactile handouts, these should be noted and a sample should be submitted if possible.

Questions should be directed to Lou Ann Blake at lblake@nfb.org or 410-659-9314, ext. 2221, or Ryan Pugh at rpugh@nfb.org or 410-659-9314, ext. 2409.
