National Federation of the Blind Commends the Introductions of Blind Americans Return to Work Act
Baltimore, MD (February 18, 2025): The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), the transformative advocacy organization of blind Americans, commends Representative Pete Sessions (R-TX-17) and Representative Kweisi Mfume (D-MD-7) for the introduction of the Blind Americans Return to Work Act (H.R. 1175) in the 119th Congress House of Representatives. This legislation addresses a major barrier blind individuals face in achieving economic independence: the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) "earnings cliff." Currently, blind SSDI recipients lose their benefits if they earn more than a set monthly threshold, which discourages them from seeking higher-paying jobs or working more hours, despite their desire and talent to work.
The proposed legislation aims to eliminate this "earnings cliff" by gradually phasing out SSDI benefits as blind individuals earn more, allowing them to keep part of their benefits while transitioning to full employment. This would create a clear and consistent work incentive.
“This reform will enable blind individuals to thrive in the workforce without the threat of losing their financial security, truly leveling the playing field," said Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind. “We appreciate the collaborative leadership of our representatives and their commitment to champion the rights and dignity of all blind Americans.”
