Baltimore, Maryland (August 4, 2023): The National Federation of the Blind, the transformative membership and advocacy organization of blind Americans, issued the following statement on the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that has just been published by the United States Department of Justice under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act:

The National Federation of the Blind applauds the Biden administration for this historic effort to promote accessibility of digital information from, and interaction with, state and local government entities. With the recent release of website accessibility regulations under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the federal government has taken an initial, long-overdue step in securing the right of millions of blind Americans to a digital landscape that is more welcoming and functional.

Special appreciation goes to the dedicated officials at the United States Department of Justice and throughout the government who have consistently championed the proposal of these regulations. Their unwavering commitment to breaking down artificial digital barriers is commendable. 

The National Federation of the Blind looks forward to carefully reviewing these proposed regulations and preparing full public comments. We remain steadfast in our mission to ensure that all blind Americans have the tools and resources they need to live the lives they want. We look forward to a future where digital equality is not an exception or an afterthought, and where instead all digital information and technology is born accessible.
