NHL Referee Dan O'Rourke Completes Route 66 Ride for Braille Literacy

NHL and National Federation of the Blind to Join Chicago Celebration

Chicago, IL - September 7, 2023 - NHL referee Dan O'Rourke will conclude his incredible journey, the Route 66 Ride for Braille Literacy, in support of the Braille programs for blind children of the National Federation of the Blind. The closing festivities will begin at the Route 66 plaque near the Art Institute of Chicago at 8:30 a.m. local time. A celebratory event will follow at the Harold Washington Library Center at approximately 9:30 a.m.

Throughout the over forty-day expedition, Dan O'Rourke, an NHL referee since 1999 whose father is blind, has cycled over 2,700 miles, visiting cities and landmarks along the iconic Route 66. This remarkable endeavor aims to raise awareness and funds for Braille literacy, empowering blind children to access the joy of reading and prepare to live the lives they want.

Representatives from the National Federation of the Blind, including its national President, Mark Riccobono, will join O'Rourke in Chicago to celebrate his accomplishment and raise public awareness. Other organizations supporting the blind and people with disabilities will also be on hand, and the Campbell Bowl will be on display for hockey aficionados.
