My Journey of Light and Wisdom:

Thirty Years in the National Federation of the Blind of Puerto Rico and 23 Years Educating with Passion

By Prof. Tomás Cintron Rivera (en español)

When it comes to overcoming adversity and turning them into opportunities, my career is a living testimony. During the last thirty years, I have carried the philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind of Puerto Rico in every step of my life, although these thirty years have not been consecutive in the organization. From my modest beginnings as a member of the NFB of Puerto Rico to my distinguished career as an educator of blind students in the Department of Education, I have left an indelible mark in the fight for equal opportunity and inclusion.

An Early Commitment to the NFB of Puerto Rico

My journey in the National Federation of the Blind of Puerto Rico began in October, 1992. Despite facing blindness from an early age, I never allowed this limitation to define my life. Instead, I joined the NFB of Puerto Rico with determination and an indomitable spirit.

Throughout these thirty years of intermittent involvement, I have worked tirelessly on various initiatives, advocating for equal rights and opportunities for blind people on the island. My commitment was highlighted in creating training programs for blind people and promoting accessibility in public settings.

The Path to the Education of Blind Students

Over time, I decided to take my commitment to the blind community to the next level by becoming an educator of blind students at the Puerto Rico Department of Education. This decision marked a milestone in my life and career, as I became a role model for my students and colleagues.

My approach to educating blind students was based on the belief that disability should not be a barrier to learning and success. I developed innovative educational programs that focused on inclusion and adaptation, ensuring each student had the tools and support necessary to reach their full potential.

Innovation and Continuous Professional Development

Throughout my twenty-three years at the Department of Education, I not only distinguished myself as a passionate educator, but also as a tireless advocate for accessibility and adaptive technology. I assisted in the implementation of assistive technologies in classrooms and worked closely with organizations and experts in the field of visual impairment to ensure students had access to high-quality resources.

Furthermore, I never stopped learning and growing professionally. I participated in professional development courses and national and international conferences related to blind education, allowing me to be at the forefront of best practices and the latest technologies.

A Legacy of Inspiration and Change

Today, I remain a beacon of inspiration for the blind community in Puerto Rico and beyond. My dedication and passion for equal opportunities have left a lasting legacy in the National Federation of the Blind of Puerto Rico and in the Department of Education.

One of the most exciting and moving moments in my life was when I was honored with the 2023 NFB Blind Educator of the Year award. Upon receiving this prestigious recognition, I felt deep gratitude and joy. Knowing that my work as an educator had positively impacted the lives of my students and the community at large was an overwhelming feeling. This award was not only a recognition of my dedication, but also an affirmation that blind people can achieve high levels of excellence in education.

My story demonstrates that disability should not be an insurmountable obstacle, but rather a challenge that can be addressed with determination, education and appropriate support. My experience has shown that blindness does not define a person, but is only a part of their identity.

Conclusion

My career has been an extraordinary journey in the last three decades, carrying the philosophy of the National Federation of the Blind of Puerto Rico in every step of my life. My story is a testament to perseverance, passion and the ability to overcome obstacles.

As I look to the future, I continue to be a beacon of hope and a role model for all those seeking to overcome adversity and contribute to the well-being of the community. My legacy will live on as a reminder that determination and belief in oneself can lead to remarkable achievements, no matter what challenges come along the way.
