Beyond the bare bones of the statistics, who
are these children? What are their needs? What are the needs of their parents?
What resources are available to them? And, finally, does the National Federation
of the Blind (NFB) and its parents division the National Organization of Parents
of Blind Children have a role to play in meeting those needs, and if so, what
is it?
Those were the questions I pondered as I selected
and assembled together the articles in this issue. The questions are not answered
in full, and the material often raises new ones. The profiles of the children
cover many, but by no means all, of the different needs and potentials experienced
by this population. Nevertheless, I think the reader will find this issue a
useful resource, an inspiration, and a tool for expanding our knowledge, understanding,
and compassion of and for blind multiply handicapped children.
