Recently, "Diabetes Forecast"
received a letter about a subject that concerns many people with diabetes: sugar.
The writer wanted to know why a magazine for people with this disease would
publish a recipe (March 1996, p. 34 "Coconut Pineapple Compote") that
had 20 grams of sugars in one serving.
It's an excellent question and one that "Forecast"

Finding out that yes, you DO have diabetes, can take
unusual forms. It was my ophthalmologist who suspected it
and sent me for a blood sugar test. Sure enough, I was, but
it was April 1, 1986, and i thought it was an April Fool's
joke--but it was not.
My doctor put me on the oral medication diabeta. I
could not get it through my head to watch what I ate or did.

Way back in the bad old days, doctors didn't do kidney transplants into diabetics. For
whatever reason, before 1968, a diabetic facing kidney failure, end stage renal disease,
had only two options: hemodialysis, or death.
