For more than five years, we, the Diabetes
Action Network of the National Federation of the Blind, have been leading the
campaign to get the insulin manufacturers and the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) to reform the way insulin is packaged. Currently, all types of insulin
sold in the United States are packaged identically, either in 10cc vials or
1.5cc pen cartridges, with only the writing on the label to tell them apart.

Volunteers Needed

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR

STUDY

Research centers participating in the Diabetes

Prevention Program (DPP) are looking for volunteers, people who

have a family history of diabetes, are overweight, or have had

gestational diabetes (GDM) when pregnant. These individuals will

be screened for IGT, impaired glucose tolerance. There will be no

charge. As approximately 50% of individuals who exhibit IGT go on

to develop type II diabetes, research is underway to see if their

Spotlight: Hazel Trujillo

SPOTLIGHT: HAZEL TRUJILLO

Hazel Trujillo is a singer-songwriter
in Miami, Florida. She is also a deejay, classical guitarist, self-defense instructor,
diabetes educator, and blind diabetic! Her busy and successful lifestyle is
a shining example of the possible, and her unique perspective on life is an
inspiration to us all. Here she shares some of her experiences with VOICE editor
Ed Bryant.

What age were you diagnosed as diabetic?

At the age of six.

The time has come to plan for the 1998 convention

of the National Federation of the Blind. As Federationists know, our 1997 convention in

New Orleans was the biggest we have ever had; however, Texas in 1998 promises to be even

better.

We will return to the Dallas-Fort Worth Hyatt
