Gathering Stories for the StoryBank Through Interviews

Below is a sample interview question list/flow. This is an aid, and these questions are in no way mandatory. None of them apply to all stories. The questions asked will depend entirely on the person you’re interviewing and the story being told. We recommend looking at the list of potential uses included in the story submission form. Being familiar with potential uses can help guide the interview.

Things to keep in mind:

  • We especially want to capture emotional stories.
  • NFB success stories are great.
  • We do need to tell stories about blindness that acknowledge that sometimes it can be painful.
  • If we are telling about a program, we want its impact and people’s feelings about it, not just its specifications or elements.

Sample interview:

  3. Tell me about your story.
  4. Then what happened?
  5. What was said or done?
  6. Tell me more.
  7. Then what happened?
  8. How did you feel?
  9. What impact did that have?
  10. How do you think others felt?
  11. Who was around?
  12. What was their reaction?
  13. Do you think this might have impacted the public?
  14. If so, how?
  15. Has it been resolved?
  16. Should anything else be done?
  17. How do you feel about what happened now?
  18. Can you tell me anything else about this?
  19. Do you have any advice for others in this situation?
