Teacher Recognition
Mrs. Geri Sexton
Teacher of the Blind and Visually Impaired,
Louisiana

Dear Editor:
I was very pleased to see your article giving us
a chance to recognize the teacher(s) of our children.
My daughter, Amber, has had the same teacher of
the visually impaired for nine years. Little did I know on that morning nine years ago,
when my three-year-old was beginning school, how valuable Mrs. Geri Sexton would
be—not only as a teacher, but as a friend, an advisor, an advocate, a go-between, and
an "any-problem" solver!
There is nothing that Mrs. Geri doesn't think of.
Amber's books have always been ordered in a timely fashion. If for some reason the books
don't make it in time, other provisions are made. Preparations for the different schools
she has attended have been made in a very timely fashion. Amber is getting ready to go to
junior high school. Mrs. Geri has already made an effort to help Amber meet some of her
classmates (she is not presently going to school in her zoned area). She has also made
several trips to the school to get things ready for Amber.
Any time I have made a request for Mrs. Geri for
special equipment, it is forwarded immediately to the correct person. I have never been
turned down for something I have felt Amber needed. I owe a big thank you to the Rapides
Parish School Board, Special Education for that, also.
Amber has faced various social problems during
the years. Geri Sexton has been the one I have called on in those times of trouble, also.
She never minds helping and just about always has a solution.
Mrs. Geri has gone the extra mile by attending
extra-curricular activities that Amber has participated in, such as piano recitals, choir
concerts, and plays. It is always special to Amber to have her attend these activities.
I am in the process of trying to convince Mrs.
Geri to stay with us until Amber graduates from high school. She is near retirement and
very deserving of a great retirement, but we're not ready to let her go!
Sincerely
Jo Lynn Chesser
