Check Page - EQ Week 3 for NLS

Introduction

This week we wrap up our deep dive into paper folding and technical drawing and explore the mathematical laws that govern origami. We finish up the week starting to work on our projects to teach other blind and low-vision people the things we’ve been learning all month. One of the best ways to learn something deeply is to teach it to someone else.

Overview of the Week

The table below outlines the ideal schedule for the week. Scheduling is most important for the Connect and Practice activities. The other activities are more flexible and can be completed at whatever time works best for you.

When Program Element
Sunday, 7/18 Engage (asynchronous)
Monday, 7/19, 3-6p EST Connect Monday (essential synchronous session)
Tuesday, 7/20 Practice 1 (essential asynchronous)
Tuesday, 7/13 Solve (asynchronous)
Wednesday, 7/21, 3-6p EST Connect Wednesday (essential synchronous session)
Thursday, 7/22 Practice 2 (essential asynchronous)
Thursday, 7/22, 4-5p EST Connect+ (optional synchronous session)
Friday, 7/23, 3-6p EST Connect Friday (essential synchronous Session)
Saturday, 7/24 Extend (asynchronous)

Details and instructions for each program element are provided under the corresponding heading below. For example, instructions for the Engage element are under the “Engage” heading.

Engage

Check out the following sources to begin thinking about the topics we’ll be focusing on this week. The sources are provided in a variety of formats below, choose the format that works best for you. You’ll find hard copies in your NFB EQ box.

Perseverance
Instructions
Follow the Shipper’s Dilemma Instructions to solve the puzzle.

This is a challenging puzzle. It might take you some time to solve it and you might get stuck. That is ok. If you get stuck, you could reach out to other NFB EQ Online participants to get ideas about how to move forward.

Practice 2

Based on the description shared in class, start brainstorming for your project. Consider the following questions:

  1. Of the topics that we’ve discussed at NFB EQ (i.e., paper folding, technical drawing, ways to build spatial thinking ability, approaches for doing STEM nonvisually, etc.) what would you like to share with other blind and low-vision people?
  2. Do you want to work on your own or with other NFB EQ participants? If you’d like to work with others, chat with them about collaborating.
  3. There are many ways you could facilitate learning within our community; which format sounds most interesting to you?. A few ideas are:
    a. Audio recording/podcast
    b. Video with descriptive audio (e.g., demonstration, skit, interview, screencast, etc.)
    c. Text-based mediums (e.g., blog post, magazine article, written instructions, etc.)
    d. A series of social media posts
    e. A synchronous virtual lesson
    f. An accessible book (analog or digital)
    g. A game (e.g., tabletop, digital, text adventure, card, etc.)
    h. Other creative ideas you have!
  4. Would you like to pitch your final product to one of the people who curate the NFB’s various publication outlets? If so, take a little time to explore the material that is published in that venue to get ideas about how to craft your work.
    a. Nation’s Blind Podcast
    b. Voice of the Nation’s Blind Blog
    c. NFB on Twitter
    d. NFB on Instagram
    e. NFB on Facebook
    f. Braille Monitor: monthly magazine
    g. Future Reflections: quarterly magazine for parents and teachers of blind children
