Food and Drink

Coffee Shops

Halcyon Coffee

Address: 218 W 4th Austin, TX 78701 | Phone: 512-472-9637

Website: https://www.halcyoncoffeebar.com

Halcyon is a Warehouse District all-day cafe that opened in 2002, before the term 'all-day cafe' even existed. It's a calm coffee shop by day where you can get some work done, a cafe with breakfast and simple food options like panini sandwiches and salads, and a bar that's open until 2am every night, with cocktails, wine, and beer. It's right near a bunch of nightclubs, and it's probably the place you've drunkenly stumbled into at 1:30am for their tableside s'mores.

Houndstooth Coffee

Address: 401 Congress Ave. Austin TX 78701 | Phone: 512-394-0605

Website: https://www.houndstoothcoffee.com

Downtown Austin. Houndstooth makes some of the best coffee in Austin, and you'll find the Downtown location hidden in the base of the Frost Bank Tower. You can tell this place pays attention to the details—like the slick decoration of the space, and exactly how loud to blast old-school hip-hop so that you can still talk to the baristas about the pros and cons of oat milk. During peak hours it can get pretty busy and noisy, so it's not ideal for a long work session or interview, but it's fine for a meeting or just hanging out.

Nightlife & Neighborhood Districts

Dirty Sixth

Location / Boundaries: East 6th Street between Congress & I-35

Directions from JW Marriott: Head north on Congress Ave. for four blocks, then turn right on East 6th Street.

Dirty Sixth is the loud, busy part of downtown. This is where you will see bright lights, big crowds, and lots of bar-to-bar energy. Many places have live bands playing cover songs. Drinks are cheaper here, and the crowd often includes college students and visitors. It can feel a little wild, especially late at night.

Warehouse District

Location / Boundaries: West 6th Street between Congress and Lamar

Directions from JW Marriott: Head north on Congress Ave. for four blocks, then turn left on West 6th Street.

The Warehouse District is a calmer and more polished part of downtown. Bars here focus more on good cocktails and a relaxed vibe. You will find DJs instead of live bands in many spots. It is popular with professionals and people in town for work. It feels more upscale and less crowded than Dirty Sixth.

Rainey Street

Location / Boundaries: Rainey Street Historic District (South of Cesar Chavez, west of I-35)

Directions from JW Marriott: Head east on 2nd Street for three blocks, then turn right on Trinity Street. Use the light to cross and go left on Cesar Chavez, then turn right on Red River, left on Driskill. Rainey Street is on the right.

Rainey Street is known for its historic bungalow houses that were turned into bars. Many places have outdoor patios, food trucks, and games. It is easy to walk from one bar to another. The crowd is social and friendly, and the overall feeling is fun but not too hectic. It is a great place to hang out with a group.

East Sixth

Location / Boundaries: East 6th Street between I-35 and Pleasant Valley

Directions from JW Marriott: Head north on Congress Ave. for four blocks, then turn right on East 6th Street. Go past the Dirty Sixth District; once you pass under I-35, you are in the East Sixth District.

East Sixth is across the highway and has a more local, neighborhood feel. You will find smaller music venues, dive bars, and craft breweries. The live music here is often original and more true to Austin’s deep music roots. It is laid back, creative, and a little less crowded than downtown.

SoCo (South Congress)

Location / Boundaries: South Congress between Riverside and Oltorf

Directions from JW Marriott: Head south on Congress Ave. for one block, then cross the Congress Bridge until you get to Riverside.

SoCo is a vibrant mix of nightlife, shopping, and great views of the city skyline. You will find rooftop bars, live music venues, and stylish places to eat and drink. It is highly popular with both locals and visitors. The pace is slower, making it a good spot for walking around and taking in the quintessential Austin vibe.

The Drag

Location / Boundaries: Guadalupe Street between Martin Luther King Jr. and 30th Street

Directions from JW Marriott: Further away from hotel (best to take a bus or rideshare). From JW Marriott, head north on Congress Ave. for two blocks, turn left on East 4th Street for two blocks. A bus stop will be on the left on Lavaca. Take bus 801 to UT West Mall Station.

The Drag runs directly next to the University of Texas campus. As a result, it features a younger student crowd and a more casual feel. Bars are simple, drinks are affordable, and the atmosphere is relaxed. It is not focused on massive nightlife, but it is easygoing and friendly.

South Lamar

Location / Boundaries: South Lamar between Riverside and Ben White

Directions from JW Marriott: Further away from the hotel (best to take a bus or rideshare). From JW Marriott, head north on Congress Ave. for two blocks, turn left on East 4th Street for three blocks. A bus stop will be on the right on Guadalupe at Republic Square Park. Take bus 803 to Barton Springs Station.

South Lamar sits a little outside the downtown core but remains very close. It boasts an excellent mix of live music venues, craft breweries, and highly rated restaurants. The crowd is distinctly more local, and the vibe is relaxed yet lively. It's an ideal choice if you want a fun night out without the overwhelming downtown chaos.
